Yolanda Gomez Garcia
September 23, 1956 – December 19, 2021
Yolanda was a teacher, loving grandmother, mother, daughter, loving sister; Yolanda Garcia (Gomez), 65, was born on September 23, 1956, to and survived by her parents Ramiro & Anita (Cortez) Gomez, Sr, in San Benito, TX. Yolanda passed away peacefully on December 19, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ruperto Jr. & Angela (Benavides) Gomez, maternal grandparents, Gaspar Sr. & Neives (DeLeon) Cortez, grandson Hutcherson Garcia, and nephew John Michael Flores. Yoli is survived by her husband, Hector Garcia, three sons, and three daughters-in-law, Mark and Tina of Dallas, Michael and Anna of Corpus Christi and Richard and Melissa Garcia of Houston and grandchildren Xavier of Corpus Christi, Maddie and Chloe of Dallas, Jacob and Benjamin of Houston. Her eight siblings also survive her, Velma Gomez of San Benito, Suzi Weightman (John), formerly of Austin, now residing in Corpus Christi; Ramiro Gomez, Jr (Ivonne) of San Benito, Dan Gomez (Martha) of Corpus Christi, Gracie Flores (Joe) of Helotes, Teri Gomez (Anthony) of Houston, and Rene Gomez (Sandy) and Steve Gomez (Ana) both of Brownsville many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins from all over the US, and special godchildren.
She was born and partially raised in San Benito, Texas. During her early school years, she attended St. Theresa Catholic School, attended San Benito High School, and then moved with the family to Brownsville, where she graduated from Brownsville High School in 1974; after that, she enrolled and studied at Texas Southmost College while working for Dr. Trapp in Brownsville.
Yoli met and married Hector Garcia, who was the love of her life for 46 years, and later moved to Austin, where she continued her school at Austin Community College before they settled in Corpus Christi. Yoli was a beautiful and devoted wife and mom, determined to continue her schooling while raising her boys. She graduated from Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi in 1994 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She began her teaching career as a 2nd-grade teacher with Corpus Christi ISD and then a pre-K teacher at Most Precious Blood Catholic School.
Yoli was active in her church and taught CCD on Sundays. She enjoyed the great outdoors, where she found a passion for kayaking and fishing. She was active in the Corpus Christi tennis community since the late '80s and became involved with Al Kruse Tennis Center, where she was an active tennis player, team captain and built many friendships. Her love of sports did not stop with tennis. She loved both college and professional football following the Aggies, Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys. She also watched countless hours of baseball and of course tennis.
In 2013, she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which gave her a stronger will to live life to its fullest, but always guided by her strong faith and positive attitude. Yoli never let this diagnosis slow her down or get her down. Throughout her life, she made it her mission to put others first, even when she was struggling with cancer. She was admired and was loved by so many friends and family, and anyone that met her was a better person for knowing her. As the oldest of nine siblings, Yoli was the leader of the Gomez clan when it came to planning gatherings or was always available to offer advice on anyone's journey through her own life experiences. She never took shortcuts or had second thoughts. She believed family is where love is the strongest and that prayer is essential in life. The family asks in place of flowers that remembrances be made in the form of a contribution to MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston.
