Verna Stone, 89 passed away at her home in Corpus Christi on February 16, 2021. She was born in the tiny community of Cottonwood near the small town of Eustace in East Texas. She was the eighth & last child born to Florence Watkins Key and William Carroll Key. Two sisters passed in childhood prior to Verna's birth. She is preceded in death by her parents, 5 older brothers, two cherished nephews and her adoring husband.
Verna is survived by three children, Susan Stone, Kathleen Stone, and Charles Stone (wife Donna); grandchildren Jenna Norman and Lara Norman (Susan's daughters); Troy Stone and Thomas Stone (Charles's sons); and cousin Betty Jo Bearden. She is also survived by many adored nieces & nephews.
Verna graduated from Humble High School where she was voted "Most Beautiful" and remained beautiful and youthful until death. After high school, she started working in Houston and studying at the University of Houston. She met her husband, Charles Barton Stone, in Houston on a blind date. Neither one ever had eyes for anyone else and had an extremely loving marriage. They were married 53 years until his passing on May 16, 2006.
Her husband's career as a geophysicist with Shell Oil and other executive positions took the family to live in Texas, California and overseas to Australia. Throughout the years, they lived in Corpus Christi several times and returned again for retirement. Despite the many family moves, Verna was persistent and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Houston, the same day as her 20th high school reunion.
Verna was generous to her loved ones, her church, and her community. She enjoyed volunteering in the office of the Church of the Good Shepherd and volunteered for many years in the gift shop and as a docent for the South Texas Museum of Arts.
