IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia
Gonzalez
April 14, 1942 – December 25, 2024
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria Sylvia Gonzalez, 82, beloved mother of Mark, Kimberly and Lisa, and grandmother to Jeremy, Emily, Ryland, Noah, and Zoe, went to be with the Lord on December 25, 2024, leaving a void her family cannot fill.
Born on April 14, 1942, in Alice, Texas, Sylvia was one of 12 children born to Guadalupe and Gonzalo Rios. Sylvia has now been reunited in Heaven with her beloved spouse, Delio Julio "D.J." Gonzalez, who preceded her in death just three months prior on September 25, 2024. Their love story spanned over 60 beautiful years of marriage—a bond so strong that even in passing, they could not be without each other. Their enduring partnership was a shining example of devotion, faith, and love, leaving an unforgettable legacy for their children.
Sylvia is survived by her two brothers, Ruben and Javier, who held a special place in her heart and has joined her mother and father as well as sisters Ercelia, Christina, Consuelo, Ruth and brothers Baldemar, Gonzalo, Samuel.
Up until the end Sylvia's life was deeply rooted in her faith, family and friends. She was committed to raising her family with firm values and a love for the Lord. A devoted member of Primera Iglesia Bautista, Sylvia played an active and vital role in her church community. Over the years, she served in various leadership roles, coordinated Vacation Bible Schools, served the Youth Group as well as the WMU and Dorcas. She especially loved singing as an alto in the church choir, particularly during the Christmas "cantata" each year. Many of the beautiful family memories involved the church and the friendships she and DJ fostered over the years.
In her professional life, Sylvia was a first-generation educator. She earned a Master's degree in Administration and worked part-time as an assistant principal at Driscoll Middle School, where she was a mentor and friend to her colleagues. A highlight of her teaching career was when First Lady Hillary Clinton visited her classroom, where Sylvia taught English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). She took great pride in her profession and the impact she made as an educator.
Sylvia was a woman of strong convictions never hesitant to express her beliefs. Her steadfast values served as a guiding light to the family she loved so dearly. She is survived by her three children, Mark Gonzalez, Kimberly Gonzalez, and Lisa Trevino; her son-in-law Ken Trevino; and her daughter-in-law Michelle Gonzalez—all of whom she loved dearly. Her five grandchildren, Jeremy, Emily, Ryland, Noah, and Zoe, brought her immense joy and pride. She was especially thrilled to learn about her first great-granddaughter, Julia, the daughter of her grandson Jeremy and his wife, Brianna.
Sylvia's generous and loving spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She enjoyed visiting with family, effortlessly making new friends (especially at her favorite restaurants), and sharing her warm smile with all who crossed her path. A devoted San Antonio Spurs fan, Sylvia loved watching games and could speak in detail about players and stats over the years. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, a testament to her sharp mind and curious nature.
Sylvia will be remembered for her vibrant personality, her strong voice in many areas of life, her boundless faith, her deeply held convictions, and her love for her family and church community. Sylvia leaves behind a legacy of faith, laughter, love, and unshakable principles, which will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A celebration of Sylvia's beautiful life will be held at Primera Iglesia Bautista located at 1509 Tarlton on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the church's fellowship hall. Later that day, Sylvia and her beloved D.J. will be interred together at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery located at 9974 I-37 at 2:00 p.m., where family and friends are welcome to join in honoring their lives and love.
