Richard B. (Sonne) Torres, age 67, died on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, Ricardo Torres and his mother, Faustina (Benavides). Also preceded in death by his brothers Daniel Torrez and Carlos Torres, his sister, Frances Moran and granddaughter , Darian Martinez.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Anita, and three children: Richard (Cindy) Torres, Erica (Joe) Martinez, and Yvette Torres (Juan Hernandez). He also leaves behind 7 beautiful granddaughters: Chloe Torres, Devin Martinez, Danielle Martinez, Ryan Hernandez, Yasmin Hernandez, Yancey Hernandez and Raina Hernandez. He is survived by his siblings, Manuel (Vilma) Torres, Marta (Manuel) Gallardo, Elizabeth Ortiz, Irma McGregor. Also survived by numerous nieces , nephews , cousins and special dog, Coco.
Richard was a veteran of the Vietnam War, who served 3 tours of duty with the 101st Airborne Division between 1966-1968. He received several medals during his service including a Purple Heart. He grew up in Corpus Christi, one of 8 children of Ricardo and Faustina Torres. After returning from Vietnam, he joined the Corpus Christi Police Department. He served the citizens of Corpus Christi for 28 years, retiring as a Sergeant in 1996. His love for law enforcement and his fellow officers stayed with him for the rest of his life. His sense of humor and love of practical jokes will be missed greatly by everyone who knew him. After retirement, he enjoyed many hours at the original Chacalera's and then Los Chacas with his golfing friends.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Guardian funeral home chapel A with a Holy Rosary and Celebration to begin at 7:00 p.m. that evening. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 5, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic church, 2509 Nogales/MacArthur.
