Competitive by nature, he particularly loved computer games, Star Wars, Critical Role, Chess, and other Board Games.  There was never a game, puzzle, or challenge that he could not figure out.

Rene was a teacher for 20 years teaching junior high and high school math at various Corpus Christi area schools, most recently was Tuloso-Midway.

Rene made a big impact on his students throughout the years.  His students could depend on him to be a great mentor with an even greater sense of humor.  Even though he had high expectations for his students, he never ceased in his efforts to help them succeed.

A devoted husband for 20 years, Rene spent every day loving his wife.  Rene and Mary met while attending college at Schreiner University for which they both serve on the Alumni Board.  Mary and Rene spent their time together watching their favorite shows, traveling to the hill country, eating at their favorite restaurants, and spending time with family.

Rene will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary (Corpus Christi), parents Carmen and Rene Canales Sr., (Corpus Christi) Brother Luis Canales (Cristina), and Niece Makaylah Canales (Houston).  He will also be remembered by Parents In Law Antonio and Ester Yruegas (Cuero), Brother and Sister In Law Tony and Alishia Yruegas, Niece and Nephew Samantha and Steven Yruegas, (San Antonio) Sister and Brother In Law Anna and Gabe Striedel, nieces and nephew Gabby, Abby and Alex, (Port Lavaca) Sister and Brother In Law Mary Lou and Zach Tysor (San Antonio).

As we remember Rene, we will continue to live by his advice for his students to "Be good, be careful, and behave."
