Obituary

Rene Cabrera passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 23, 2023 at the age of 81 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He was born in Kingsville, Texas to Esequiel and Emma Cabrera on February 4, 1942.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to many is now at rest.

As we try to capture such an accomplished life in only a few words; many would describe Rene as dedicated, brave and humble. He proudly served his country in both the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy. Building upon his Military experience, he then excelled in a life of Civil Service. The opportunities that his employment awarded him were endless. He traveled the Country and many parts of the world in the name of freedom. Granted he served in numerous capacities over the years; he would formally become the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer for NAS-Corpus Christi, NAS-Kingsville, NS-Ingleside and NAS-Beeville.

Following his retirement he pursued many notable hobbies, to include photography and his infamous 'Rene Cabrera's Tejano Journal' which appeared regularly in The Weekend Magazine of the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Rene was passionate about art and music; his style ranged from Kris Kristofferson's, "Why Me Lord," to the beauty of Tejano, as he described it in 1996, "[a] unique and indigenous sound."

Although work and professional responsibilities were always of great importance to Rene; he also enjoyed the simplicity of life. Taking the time to attend family gatherings and special celebrations. He had his own unique ways of showing love and guidance to those who were willing to learn. His social etiquette was always on display, with his outgoing personality, we are convinced he never met a stranger. Above all else; he lived by three simple principles: God, Country, and Family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Esequiel and Emma Cabrera; and his beloved sister Rosario Cabrera.

Rene leaves behind to cherish these memories, his wife Grace Saenz; children: Chris (Yvonne) Cabrera of Edinburg, Texas, Kathy (Scott) Lewis of McKinney, Texas, Alyssa Saenz Cabrera of Corpus Christi, Texas, Nora (Ruben) Reyes of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren: Jared, Stefani, Marissa, Ziggy, Madissen, Conner, Aiden, Jeremiah, Robert, III, Ariana, Miranda; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings: Enedina (Leo) Ramos of Kingsville, Texas, Emma (R.J.)
