IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Philip John
Unitis Jr.
September 7, 1939 – November 9, 2023
Philip John (Johnny) Unitis, Jr. passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023.
Johnny was born September 7, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Philip J. and Olga A.
(Spanko) Unitis. His family moved to Corpus Christi in 1947 where he would later attend
W.B. Ray High School from 1955-57 and Roy Miller High School from 1957-58. He
proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1958 to 1962 as a Corporal E/4 whose
main job was an enemy spotter for naval guns, artillery, air strikes and tanks.
Johnny worked as a (mostly) self-employed auto mechanic for over 43 years. He owned
and operated Unitis Auto on Carroll Lane until he retired in 2007. During his years as a
mechanic, he was involved in drag and stock car racing (driving and fabricating).
Because of his passion for Chrysler products, Johnny was known as "The Mopar Man"
to many.
He enjoyed the outdoors, boating, camping, and sports – especially softball (playing and
coaching), golf, etc. He was an avid bowler and golfer for many years. Johnny took
great joy in grilling and cooking in general and was always trying to make a certain dish
a little better! In addition to his many talents, he was a self-taught Jack of (nearly) ALL
trades. There wasn't any type of construction he couldn't do and took great pride in
doing!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip J. Unitis and Olga (Spanko) Horner; his
sister Aloise (Unitis) Lea; and his brother William A. Horner.
He is survived by his wife,
Fran Unitis; daughter and son-in-law Tisha and James Kersey; stepdaughter and son-
in-law Michelle and Jody Zdansky and step-grandchildren Madysen and Halle; stepson
and daughter-in-law Landon and Sonia Farquer and step-grandchildren Cody, Austin,
and Tre; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Gene Horton and many nieces and
nephews and great nieces and nephews.
