IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ofelia C.
Duran
April 22, 1923 – May 16, 2021
Ofelia C. Duran passed into eternal life on Sunday, May 16, 2021. She was 98.
Ofelia was born April 22, 1923 to Antonio Cortes and Carmen Vela in Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, Mexico, at the time known as San Pedro de Roma, where she grew up.
After marrying her husband Manuel Duran in 1946, she settled into life as a homemaker in Texas where she was naturalized. Her two grandsons affectionately called her "Huela," a term of endearment also adopted by her own children and great-grandsons. She was never far away from her grandsons, whether living together or next door, and helped raise them along with their parents. Ofelia and her sister Olivia were incredibly close, a dynamic duo, and everyone loved them as the "Huelas."
She enjoyed sitting in her rocking chair where she prayed her rosary every day, and crocheted beautiful scarves and blankets for others. She loved to shop at Bealls and Dillard's. When visiting relatives or going to special occasions, she was always well-dressed and people frequently complimented her on her clothing. She very much enjoyed her telenovelas, and you didn't dare interrupt her during a broadcast of Walter Mercado. She deeply cared for other people, and even when you didn't need it and didn't ask for it, she would hand you a few dollars and say No le diga a nadie – Don't tell anyone. Her family was never want for food or comfort, and her homemade flour tortillas were the absolute best.
Ofelia is preceded in death by her husband Manuel Duran, her daughter Blanca D. Becerra, her son Manuel Antonio Duran, her sisters Olivia (Noe) Benavides and Odilia (Rodolfo) Benavides, and her son-in-law Juan J. "Jesse" Becerra.
She is survived by her grandsons Javier (Angela) Becerra and Omar Adrian (Beth) Becerra, and her great-grandsons Joaquin Javier Becerra, Noah Trevino, Javier "Lil Jav" Becerra, and Henry Manuel Becerra. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family would like to express their love to Hope and Lino Rivas for their years of caring for Huela. The family would also like to thank the staff at San Rafael Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for their care of Ofelia in her final months.
Public Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021 at Guardian Funeral Home Chapel B with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. that evening.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church 504 E. Santa Clara St. Hebbronville, Texas 78361
Burial will follow in the New Hebbronville Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her husband and son.
