IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nathaniel Guiberson
Rhodes
May 3, 1946 – September 25, 2025
Nathaniel Guiberson Rhodes died on September 25, 2025, in his home surrounded by family and friends. Nate was born on May 3, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, the second of four children, to Lillian Burnside and Thomas Burton Rhodes, Sr. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Mary Anne, his children Ashley (Kyle Smith), Will and Scott (Leigh); six grandchildren, Natalie, Lily, Burton, Catalina, Kirby and Riley; his brother Tom (Suzy) and sisters Ellen (Thad Moore) and Amy (Hugh Stephenson).
Nate was raised in Dallas and attended Highland Park schools beginning at Armstrong Elementary and ending at Highland Park High School. In high school he excelled in academics and sports playing tight end on the varsity football team.
Nate attended Stanford University his freshman year and then transferred to SMU. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity where he met many lifelong friends. It was at SMU where he met Mary Anne Miller (his bride-to-be) on a blind date arranged by his childhood friend, Nancy Houseman Haroldson (gotta give her credit)! They were married on December 27, 1968. Shortly after Nate joined the Texas Air National Guard, the newlyweds moved to Sacramento where Nate trained as a navigator at Mather Air Force Base.
After completing his military training, Nate attended law school at the University of Texas. While in law school two new Rhodes were born, Ashley and Will. After graduation Nate decided to try his hand at business ownership and bought Pleasure Time Beverages, a soda pop factory which boasted "22 flavors including Club Soda and Tonic." Around Austin he was affectionately known as "The Pleasure Time Man." Unfortunately, the price of sugar doubled, and there were no profits to be made. He closed Pleasure Time's doors, took the bar and became "Lawyer Rhodes."
Nate's first job as a lawyer was with the Corpus Christi City Attorney's office. He moved his family to the "Sparkling City by the Sea" and soon a new Rhodes joined the family, Scott. The District Attorney's office was next and then private practice for forty years. Many will remember Nate cruising around town in his red Cadillac convertible...people waving and shouting, "Hey, Lawyer Rhodes."
Nate was a coach, a counselor, a mentor, a friend...not to mention two-time City of Corpus Christi Handball Champion!
He was a fair man who always gave everyone the benefit of the doubt.
