Obituary

Mary "Sue" Rees, 102, passed away on January 27, 2025, in Corpus Christi, TX. Sue had made her home at The Mirador for several years.

Sue was born on October 4, 1922, to Leslie Smith and Edward Leonard Reese in Cameron, Texas, and raised in Dallas, TX. She attended Southern Methodist University and worked at the Library of Science. She later worked in Japan and returned to Texas to join the staff at the county library and later the State Library in Austin. It was there that she met Warren, a petroleum engineer, and the couple married on November 14, 1957. They moved to Corpus Christi in 1961 with their two sons. Sue later returned to college and received a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Corpus Christi. Sue was active in many organizations throughout the years and was always considered a great conversationalist, not only in the arts but in areas that interested her. She and Warren enjoyed many common interests—both were artists and loved being creative in many areas, often collaborating together on special projects.

Sue loved sculpture (wax, clay and bronze), drawing, painting, and creating church banners for display at their church, St. John's United Methodist Church where they were members for more than 50 years. Warren enjoyed collecting gems and minerals and for many years carved small jade sculptures with a dental drill. Sue enjoyed wearing many of the pieces of jewelry that Warren designed and they often donated pieces to the church's live and silent auction events. Sue was commissioned by the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History to create three life-sized sculptures depicting the Karankawa Indian tribe, and her work was on display for many years at the museum. The sculptures were later put into storage, then restored and moved to the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport where they are on display.

Preceding Sue in death was her husband, Warren A. Rees, Jr. who died in 2016.

Other survivors include two sons, Randal of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Darrell of Corpus Christi, TX. and their families, including four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many special friends in Corpus Christi and throughout
South Texas.
