Obituary

Margie Anne Avery, 93, was called home to her Heavenly Father November 10, 2022.She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, April 1,1929, to James Bethel and Sara Elizabeth Adams. Margie was a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi. She graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1945.

During her youth, Margie was active in the First Christian Church, and at the age of 12, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She met her husband Steve in the youth group at church. Most summers were spent in Georgetown, Texas, visiting cousins and grandparents. She loved dancing, and enjoyed ballet and tap dancing classes, but her lifelong dream was to become a registered nurse.

Margie attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, followed by nursing school in Waco, Texas, at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital. She finished nursing school at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, graduating with honors and first in her class.

Margie began her nursing career at Driscoll Children's Hospital, then worked as a traveling nurse for the Navy Relief Society.  She also worked at Memorial Hospital, and for Dr. Maurice Grossman, a doctor in private practice. Later in her career she was asked to teach Health Occupations, a work/study class at Flour Bluff High School. A Bachelor of Science degree was required to teach this class, so Margie went back to college and obtained her degree from Corpus Christi State University, at the age of 51.

Many of her former students pursued careers in health-related fields due to the influence she had. She finished her nursing career as the school nurse at Flour Bluff High School.

Margie and Steve celebrated 54 years of marriage. They traveled to many exciting places together; her favorite was a family trip to Israel. They enjoyed visiting State and National Parks around the country, cruises, and traveling to various states to attend Steve's WWII ship reunions.

She, along with Steve, were members of "The Greatest Generation." She lived through the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, Korean War, and 16 Presidents.

During WWII she remembered rations on food and gas, ration books, blackout drills when German subs were spotted off the Gulf of Mexico, saving foil to turn in for the war effort, buying war stamps to be put in books to buy war bonds, volunteering with her mother at the Red Cross to help fold bandages to be used on the wounded. If the war had lasted longer, and she had been older, she wanted to join the Cadet Nurse Corp.

Throughout her life she had been a member of several churches, including the First Christian Church of Corpus Christi, Bethany Christian Church and First Christian Church of Ingleside, where her husband, Steve, pastored for 17 years. After retirement, she and Steve were members of Trinity Worship Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

She ministered to many and was known as a prayer warrior to those who knew her. Margie loved to teach children about Jesus and lead them to receive Him as their Savior. She taught Sunday School, Children's Church, Good News Club, and Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed volunteering at Bay Area Hospital, Corpus Christi Medical Center and her church's prison ministry.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Sara Adams; husband, Reverend Steve Avery; and brother, Jim Adams. Surviving her are her daughters, Stephanie Bustamante and Robin Simms (Rick); son, Steve Jr. (Julie); stepsons, Larry Avery (Linda), Randy Avery and Greg Avery (Alma); sister-in-law, Patricia Adams; brother-in-law, Richard Avery (Joan); grandchildren, Natosha Barricklow (Paul), Shauna Minga, Juan Bustamante, Madeline Simms, Pierce Simms, Julissa Lehoski (Ben), Jake Avery, Jenna Avery, Jason Avery, Justin Avery, April Avery, Shawn Avery (Debra),Tiffany Avery; 14 great-grand children; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
