IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margarita
Solis
November 26, 1925 – December 29, 2020
Margaret (Margie) Gonzales Solis age 94 passed away on December 29, 2020.
Margaret is the daughter of Esteban and Tomasita Gonzales and is survived by her husband Daniel Solis; daughter: Elizabeth Avalos; sons: Daniel, David, Michael, Paul; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Margaret was born in 1926 on a West Texas farm near Tahoka while her parents were doing seasonal migrant farm work. She lived an eventful and happy childhood on a small family farm in Nixon, Texas in the midst of the Great Depression in a close-knit family of five sisters and three brothers. One of her favorite farm chores was leading their two dairy cows by a rope to an open pasture where she loved to sit or lie on the high grass and stare at the sky finding figures in the clouds while the cows devoured an abundance of grass.
One of her favorite pastimes as a young girl in little Nixon, TX was going to the theater where she loved the old picture shows, climbing the stairs to the balcony with the dimmed lighting, taking her seat with her sister Lilly, and watching Shirley Temple with all her antics and emotions wishing for a moment that she could be her best friend in the picture show.
Her father moved the family to Corpus Christi in 1939 as he began work on the construction of the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi before the outbreak of WWII. She attended Corpus Christi High School (later Miller H.S.) and after earning her GED, she enrolled and graduated in the first graduating class from the Del Mar College Licensed Vocational Nurse program in 1947 along with her dearest sister Lilly.
She married a dashing WWII Army Air Corps veteran in 1950 and started her life rewarded with five children and a nursing job that she cherished. She worked most of her life, including 50 years of nursing the sick and downtrodden, where nursing was her way of serving God and humanity "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me" (Matthew 25:40).
After finishing nursing school, she bravely traveled to Mexico City alone to find her long lost aunt who had not been seen in over 20 years, which led to a long close relationship with her aunt and her family. She always looked forward to the fun filled Gonzales family reunions that were held every three years to re-connect with her siblings and their families.
She was a doting grandmother to her 15 grandchildren and was quick to answer the call when her help was needed whether it was in San Antonio, Houston or Corpus Christi. Her later years in retirement did not slow her down, as she became a consummate gardener, cultivating a beautiful backyard garden admired by all who were fortunate to see it. Uniquely, she cultivated beautiful flowering plants that were native from deep in southern Mexico that were one of a kind in Corpus Christi. She taught her children and grandchildren how to love gardening for spiritual fulfillment.
She will be dearly missed by her family, but always kept close in their hearts looking forward to being reunited again.
There will be a private visitation and chapel service for the family but everybody is welcomed to meet at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery for the Committal Service and Burial at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2021.
