IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Major (Ret.)
Raymond George Schmahl
December 28, 1932 – September 6, 2024
Major (Ret.) Raymond G. Schmahl
12-28-1932 9-6-2024
Born in Buffalo, New York to Howard George Schmahl and Catherine Schmahl (neeMack), Ray was the youngest of three boys. He married Cureen M. Cummer in 1951. After a few years of marriage, a few kids and a stint in the National Guard and the power company Niagara Mohawk, Ray got the opportunity for for full time active duty in the US Army with a commission as 2nd lieutenant.
The "two kids from Buffalo" were off on a military life. That life included multiple assignments in El Paso, Texas at Fort Bliss where the family could move with Dad. It also included assignments where the family could not go with him including South Korea and South Vietnam. The final assignment was to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1968. By this time the family had grown to include 3 boys and 3 girls. Their family was the center of their lives and they loved exploring Colorado in their pop-up trailer tent camper. Their adventurous wanderlust took us all over Colorado on weekends and holidays when some other activity wasn't going on in the Springs until the last of their kids were out of high school.
Then the wanderlust hit again and Dad & Mom were off on their own explorations with a more civilized camper. They toured most of southern US costal areas and eventually found and fell in love with "The redneck Riveria" Corpus Christie. They became winter Texans and spent the warmer seasons in Colorado for years. Cureen passed in 2009 and Ray took up full time residency in Corpus Christie. After many years and many friends at Marina Village Dad agreed to accept the amenities at Trinity Tower.
At Trinity Tower Dad added another volume of friends. One of those he told me kept trying to trip him by ambush in the hallway until he finally was formally introduced to his soon to be new best friend, Claire McCauley. Dad and Claire shared many social and personal interests.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Cureen and two brothers Bud and Fred.
Ray is survived by his six children Ray, Ron, Sue, Sandy, Sheryl and Randy. Thirteen grandkids and 11 great-grandkids.
A Mass and Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Towers Corpus Christi on Saturday September 14th at 10:00 AM.
