Obituary

Mr. Luis Z. Pena, 77, passed away on May 31, 2025. He was born on August 19, 1947 in Gregory, Texas. One of eight children born to Elvira and Ubaldo Pena.

Luis was known for his big smile, hearty laugh, and ability to make everyone feel special. He was very close to his siblings, who all loved to laugh, play music, and spend time with each other, a beautiful tradition they passed on to their families. An American hero, Luis proudly served in the Vietnam War as a member of the First Aviation Brigade, the 282nd Assault
Helicopter Company, and the 3-17 Air Cavalry Charlie troop. After his time in Vietnam, he came home and married his eternal love, Emma. Luis and Emma lived a whole and happy life with their son, Luis Jr. (Luisito). Luis was an honest man who gave great advice and loved to talk. Along with his brothers, Luis created the volunteer fire department in Gregory, Texas. His faith in God was so strong that he taught religion class and played guitar in the church choir. Luis loved to talk, and gave great advice. He knew no stranger. He was smart, curious, brave and thoughtful. Dedicated and loyal, Luis worked at the Army
Depot for 33 years, retiring in August 2014. Most importantly, Luis will forever be Luisito's hero, the ultimate proof of how great a man he was.

Luis was welcomed home by his parents, Elvira and Ubaldo Pena, his sister Eva (Juan), and his brothers Fidencio (Antonia), Ubaldo, Federico (Dora), Emilio, Ysidro (Rafaela), and Ramon.  He is survived by his wife, Emma, son Luisito, sister Conrada (Alfredo) Maldonado, sister-in-law Lucy Pena, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21st at Guardian Funeral Home from 4pm-8pm with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:30pm. The Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 23rd at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church 5830 Williams Drive at 11am. Burial will follow at 1pm at The Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
