IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lorenzo Mario
Ruscello
September 14, 1935 – July 4, 2025
Our beloved Daddy, Lorenzo Mario Ruscello went home to be with the Lord on July 4, 2025 at the age of 89. He had a long battle with Dementia and other health issues. He resided at Elan Assisted Living for 8 months. He was loved by everyone there and received the best care any child would want for their parent.
Lorenzo was born in Lanciano, Italy on September 14,1935. He was the fifth of six children. He loved history and had quite a story of his own. He lived during WWII. At the age of 7 both he and his older brother were home alone when soldiers came to their village. Along with neighbors, they were lined up outside. At that moment British planes flew over causing them to look up while everyone ran for their lives. Our father and uncle, scared, hid in tunnels and ran for days. A search party was formed, and they were found at the outskirts of their town a week later.
As a teenager, Lorenzo and his friends wanted to see the pope in Rome. With no money or vehicle, they rode their bikes 272.9 km/16 hours. Along the way farmers would give them eggs, bread, and apples. At night their lodging was under the stars. In 1954 at the age of 20, Lorenzo's father was leaving to go to the USA in hope of making money that would eventually allow him to bring his family over from Italy. Before departing, our nonno asked our father to promise to carry out the dream should something happen to him. Possibly Nonno had a hunch that he would not be able to give them the American dream. His plane tragically crashed while trying to land in La Guardia Airport. True to his promise our father came a year later on the ship Andreadoria which sank exactly a year later.
Lorenzo was a tailor and a butcher. He worked on the east coast making suits. Eventually, he came to Corpus Christi where he worked at Vince's restaurant owned by his uncle. Afterwards he was a butcher at HEB where he met his wife, Natalia. They were married in 1958 for 59 years. A few years after he was drafted into the United States army. He was stationed at Fort Hood then was moved to Georgia and served at Fort Benning. He took great pride in serving this country. He furthered his career path as a meat market manager and supervisor for Handy Andy. He helped open Sun Harvest and worked there until he was 68. Not enjoying the retired life, he rejoined the workforce at HEB. Well into his 80's he was asked to be a market consultant at Staples Street Market.
Our father was known for his sense of humor, hard work ethic, being a prankster, cooking, and love for his family. We will deeply miss him. We are comforted that he is reunited in Heaven with our mother and other family members.
Lorenzo leaves behind his children Ann Margaret (Gabriel) Gutierrez, Patricia (Rene) Hernandez, Lorenzo Mario Ruscello Jr, Patricia Nicole (Jason Baugh) Ruscello, his grandchildren Joshua (Anne-Heloise) Hernandez, Alyssa Natalia Hernandez and great grandson Theo Alain Rene Hernandez, his sister Ivana Casalanguida. Lorenzo is predeceased by his wife Natalia.
