Lawrence
Simms
Jun 13, 1943 — Jun 24, 2026
Retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Lawrence (Larry) Gerald Simms, born June 13, 1943, passed to his final rest at age 83 on June 24, 2026. Larry peacefully went to sleep in Jesus at home with his wife, Regena and family close by. Larry was born in Mayview, Missouri and took his final rest in Sandia, Texas.
He was born the oldest of 5 children to Frederick Gerald Simms and Kathleen Faye Rice Simms. His parents preceded him in death. He grew up on a farm in Missouri with his four siblings, making life full and fun. He talked often of the animals, the tractors, the work, and the fun of farm life. At 18 Larry joined the Navy and spent 20 wonderful years serving his country very proudly. He became an aviation mechanic working on every plane and almost every helicopter engine the Navy and Army used. During his service he received the National Defense Service Metal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the fourth good conduct award. Larry served aboard the USS Constellation and USS Lexington during his Navy years. He worked for a short time for Holt Caterpillar before his next 23 years working for the Corpus Christi Army Depot as a civil service contractor for the Army. During his time at CCAD Larry was asked to serve on the Presidential Helicopter Program PMA-274. He spent almost 50 years working on engines and loved every minute of it.
Larry loved God, his family, his church and enjoyed camping and spent all of his free time in one of these areas. Many happy memories have been shared with his family and friends. His smile and sweet nature will be missed greatly.
He is survived by his wife, Regena Hunt Simms; his children, Kelly Lee Whitworth, Donna Lynn (T.J.) Smith, Danielle Simms Lucas; Step-sons, Isaac (Michele) Heath, David (Jaime) Heath; his brother, James Michael Simms; Sisters, Margaret Ann Jacques, Mary Lynn (Kelly) McLaughlin, and Ruth Ellen Elgin; as well as 17 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Larry will be held on October 16, 2026 at Lake Corpus Christi State Park (time to be announced).
