IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Juan Trevino
Perez
July 12, 1935 – July 23, 2025
Juan Trevino Perez, a beacon of music and inspiration, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, in his birthplace of Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on July 12, 1935, he graced the world with his presence for 90 remarkable years.
Juan's musical journey began in the vibrant dance halls of the 1950s, where his voice became the soundtrack of an era, formally known as Juan Alfredo Perez. He was the star of the night at the Corpus Christi Coliseum, the Galvan Ball Room, and many other local popular venues during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. As an artist, his creativity knew no bounds, and his passion for music was as infectious as his generous spirit. He was a composer and songwriter, whose talents earned him a revered place in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of witnessing his performances. He composed the song "LLorando Por Ti" that was recorded by Lil Joe and Reno Perez, which become a hit on the top 10 on the charts, "El Hombre Sin Ley" recorded by Domingo Pena. One of his most popular songs was "Divorcio" and many more. Before his rise to musical stardom, he was also an amateur boxer, fighting with the same passion he brought to the stage.
Recognition for Juan's talents came from high places. In 1964, during the intense times of the Vietnam War, President Lyndon B. Johnson and First Lady Lady Bird Johnson honored him for his moving composition "Paz en La Tierra" which he dedicated to the soldiers at war and their mothers. His music was not just entertainment; it was a balm for the soul, a message of peace in a world of uncertainty. His contributions to Tejano music were immortalized when he was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame, a testament to his influence and legacy. This honor was a testament to his impact on the genre and his status as a true legend in the musical community.
Juan's generosity extended beyond the stage. He organized countless benefit events with the support of his good friends, the Bonilla family, to aid families affected by tragedies. His reputation as a man of the people was cemented by his close relationships with Mexican movie stars and famous singers, such as Antonio Aguilar, Flor Sylvestre, and Rigoberto Rosales. These friendships were a reflection of his kindred spirit, and his home was often filled with the laughter and camaraderie of these icons. After a fulfilling career as a mechanical engineer at the National Linen Service, Juan continued to enrich his community by working for Mr. Pagan- Lewis, which later became Sames Crow. He retired after 35 years of dedicated service, choosing to spend his golden years surrounded by the love of his family. One of his proudest achievements was having his entire music catalog preserved in the UCLA Library University Frontera Collection, ensuring his artistic legacy would inspire generations to come.
A devout Christian, Juan lived his life with an unwavering faith that guided his every step. He leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and generosity that will resonate forever. Juan's life was a symphony composed of passion, creativity, and an unyielding zest for life. He was not just a man who walked the earth; he was a force that moved it. Today, as we celebrate his life, let us carry forward the melody he gifted us, the rhythm of a life well-lived, and the chorus of a legacy that will echo through eternity.
