Obituary

On the morning of April 2, 2022, Josefina (Josie) G. Martinez passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters in Round Rock, Texas. Josie was 85 years old.

Josie was born on May 17, 1936 in Laredo, Texas to her parents Carlos Gutierrez and Maria Jossa Gutierrez. She graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1955 and worked at H.E.B. until she met her one true love, Luis Martinez, in 1961. These two hearts would be joined as one in the sacrament of marriage on April 29, 1962.

She devoted her life to the Catholic Church beside her beloved at every military base at which he was stationed. She volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister, a sponsor for engaged couples along with her husband, a teacher of religious education for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD.) One of her proudest accomplishments while volunteering for the Church was as a Guadalupana in which she served as vice-president for three of the seven years while she lived in Edinburgh, Texas.

A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She is now our guardian angel in heaven, beside her husband who preceded her in death, watching over those they loved. Josie was also preceded in death by her parents Carlos and Maria Gutierrez and her sister Maria Gonzalez.

She is survived by her children: Luis Martinez, Jr., Monica M. Herring, Jessica M. Martinez; brothers: Carlos and Arturo Gutierrez; grandchildren: Matthew Martinez, Amanda Martinez, Elizabeth J. Puryear, Danielle M. Herring, Phoebe A. Herring, and her greatgrandchild Penelope.
