Jose M. Mejia, 91, passed away on March 12, 2014. Jose was born on March 22, 1922 to Francisco Mejia and Maria Luisa Maldonado in El Paso, Texas. He was raised in Robstown, Texas until he enlisted in the United States Army at age 18. He served faithfully and proudly for 18 years, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a decorated soldier earning the Purple Heart, 5 Bronze Stars, and many other medals of distinction. In 1958, after completing his last tour in the Army, he married his wife, Enriqueta De La Garza, in Piedras Negras, Coauhila, Mexico.
Jose was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Corpus Christi for many years. Throughout his career and into his retirement years, he was very involved with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). He loved politics, reading, traveling, and gardening. He was known for having a sense of humor.
Jose is preceded in death by his parents, Francisco and Maria Luisa Mejia; sisters, Aurora Mejia and Carmen Romo; and daughters, Jesusa Mejia and Maria Socorro Mejia.
Jose is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Enriqueta Mejia; son, Jose (Estela) Mejia Jr.; his daughter, Sandra (Porfirio) Tapia; his granddaughter, Clarissa (Robert) Beltran; and many other beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He leaves behind his beloved nephews and nieces, Rene Romo, Valeriano Romo, and Mary Lou Romo along with many other relatives and friends.
Jose will always be remembered for his devotion to God, his country, and his family.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 16th, 2014 at Guardian Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. following visitation with family and friends. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 5830 Williams Dr. on Monday, March 17th, 2014. His interment with Military honors will follow at Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi, 9974 IH 37 Access Rd. exit #9. To Leave condolences visit.www.Guardianfhcremation.com
