Melita, John. Passed away peacefully at Angel Bright Hospice April 10, 2014 after a yearlong battle with cancer. John, a native New Yorker was born September 23, 1948 in Manhattan, New York to Evelyn Dorothy Chapman and Leonard Melita. He was a proud Marine veteran having served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1969. John was a 22 year resident of Corpus Christi and 21 year employee of the USS Lexington Museum, where he was the Chief Aircraft Restoration. He is fondly remembered as a good friend to many. Although never married or having children of his own, he was lovingly referred to as "Uncle John" by Nicole and Thomas the children of his best friends of 37 years Donna and M. Charles Reustle. He is also survived by his lifelong friends Barbara and Charlie Libert of North Carolina and their family. John cherished the holidays with his extended family, loved the NY Mets and Jets, Cuervo Gold Tequila (neat), a good Italian meal and all animals, especially his own dog Maggie. John was a loyal friend who will be remembered on Lexington for the many aircraft he restored and will be missed by all whose lives were touched by his good humor and spirit. A Memorial Service will be held to honor his memory on Thursday, April 24, 2014 on board USS Lexington at 5:30 p.m.
