John Emmanuel "Johnny" Vera passed away on Saturday, January 10 in Corpus Christi, TX at the age of 86.
Johnny is survived by his wife Adelmira, sister Alice Alvarez, daughter Janie Rusek, and grandchildren Johanna (Jason) DuBose, Jena Garcia, and Trey Garcia, and great grandchildren Xander and Zachary Garcia, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Conrado and Elvira Vera, and his brother Joe Vera.
Johnny was born on August 8, 1928 in Corpus Christi, TX to Conrado and Elvira Vera. He graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1947. After graduating high school, he served his country in the United States Air Force. During his service, Johnny traveled to Europe and visited England and France. After serving in the USAF, he was a helicopter mechanic at the Corpus Christi Army Depot until he retired in 1989.
After retiring, Johnny spent a lot of time with his grandchildren, picking them up from school every day, and also volunteered in the community. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Johnny took his first holy communion at the age of 7 at St. Joseph Catholic church, where he remained a lifelong, active member and was a charter member of the Knight's of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time volunteering and ushering at the church. Johnny was also a member of the American Legion.
Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2015 at Guardian funeral home chapel A with
a prayer service to be held at 7:00 p.m. that evening. The funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Guardian Chapel, with a graveside service to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park with Full Military Honors. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Johnny's life.
