Joe Galan,
Jr.
April 17, 1939 – December 14, 2023
Joe Galan, Jr. passed away Thursday, December 14, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on April 17, 1939 to Dora Gutierrez Galan and Jose Galan. He was a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi.
Joe had a wonderful life with his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Although it is impossible to capture such a great journey, we do want to recognize a few of his accomplishments. Joe received his formal education from Roy Miller High School, graduating in the Class of 1958. He was a longshoreman and Business Agent for the I.L.A Local 1224 from the year 1956 until his retirement in 1991; from 1978 – 1991 he was an active board member for the I.L.A. Pension and Welfare Committee and the I.L.A. Guaranteed Annual Wage Committee; in the same time period he was a member of the Coastal Bend Labor Council, International Foundation of Employee Benefits and Planning. Upon his appointment, he served a five-year term as the Corpus Christi Port Commissioner from 1984 – 1989 as appointed by the City of Corpus Christi City Council.
He has always been a champion of local labor and fought to protect the underdog. He leaves big shoes to fill and will be missed by his beloved family and countless friends. His legacy will live on, forever.
He was married for the last 66 years and leaves behind his wife, Divina Munguia Galan. He has been preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Dora Galan, his son-in-law, Robert Garcia and his brother Johnny Galan (Anna Galan) of McAllen, Texas. Joe has four surviving siblings, Dora Galan Flores, Lupe Galan Garana, Luisa Pompa (Jesse Pompa), and Felix Galan, Sr. (Carrie). Joe also is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Galan and Lori Galan-Garcia (Robert Garcia). Joe also has three grandchildren, Joseph Matthew Galan, Jonathan Robert Garcia, Brianna Di Mota (Alex) and one great grandchild, Michel Alexander Mota.
Joe also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and their spouses which were very special to him.
Public Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m with a Holy Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at Guardian Funeral Home Chapel A
A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Christ the King Catholic Church on Arlington St./Rojo St.
Burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park cemetery.
