James F. Dunn (Jim) from Grayling, Michigan (formally from St. Clair and Grosse Pointe Woods, Detroit, Michigan), passed away peacefully on January 7 th , 2026.
Jim was born to James J. and Celestine Dunn in Detroit. He was the youngest of four children. He is survived by his brother Ken (Pat), predeceased by Edward (Janet) and Margaret (Sherm) Ellis.
While working together at Ross Roy Advertising in Detroit, Jim found the love of his life Leona (Lee) Einheuser. They were married on June 19 th , 1954 and shared 59 wonderful years together. Sadly, Lee preceded him in death on January 23rd, 2013. Together they raised 3 children. Gloria Spath (Michael) Coleman, Michael (Josephine) Dunn and Timothy (Elizabeth) Dunn.
As the Grand Patriarch, "Papa" will be greatly missed by his 6 grandchildren, Michael (Amy) Spath, James (Gerta) Spath, Michelle (Jeff) Anderson, Kelly Mahalak and Brian Dunn. Papa's oldest grandson Johnny Spath preceded him in death on July 23 rd , 1998. Moreover, Papa had 9 great grandchildren (8 girls and 1 boy) whom he adored and they adored him right back. Brooklyn and Charlotte Anderson, Ashton, Evie and Isla Mahalak, Julia and Joanna Spath, and John and Dorothy Spath will miss his smiles and big hugs.
Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Wisconsin during the Korean War (1948 – 1952). He worked at Ross Roy Advertising in Detroit for over 40 years. He was an Usher for over 20 years and a member of St. Matthews Dads Club.
Jim was a true gentleman, a child at heart and a sweet soul with a never-ending smile on his face. He was thoughtful and kind.
Jim's commitment to his Faith, to serving God, his family and his fellow man was unwavering. He was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. Jim brought love and joy to all that knew him. He will be sorely missed.
A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Jim's life will be held on May 18th , 2026 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan at 10:00 AM. A Gathering will be held from 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM in the church. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
