Gilbert V. Yanez Sr., 91 years old, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 12, 2016 after a short illness. He was born on October 28th, 1924 in Kingsville Texas. He moved to Corpus Christi at a very early age where he made it his hometown.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Nicanor Yanez and Rebecca Olivarez; brother, Luciano Cardiel Sr. ; two sisters, Julia Garza and Francisca Uribe.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved of 70 years his wife, Mary Zertuche Yanez ; his children, Gilbert (Nancy) Yanez, Judith Garza, Nicanor (Rosie) Yanez, Priscilla (Reagan Arnold), Ricardo Yanez, Rachel (Frank) Turner, Angela (Arthur Potter), Mario ( Holly) Yanez. Twenty-five grandchildren, forty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
In 1945 he met his wife and married in 1946. Enlisted in Army in 1943 and served two tours during the World War II and the Korean War. He participated in parade honoring the World War I veterans. He was involved in several social clubs. During his lifetime he had several jobs. Starting from shoe shining, mechanic, air conditioning, and working at Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi and finally retiring from National Seashore.
He loved fishing, family events, dancing and watching old western movies. He was full of life and loved each and everyone of us the same.
Pall bearers are sons, Gilbert Yanez Jr., Ricardo Yanez and Mario Yanez, Grandchildren, Gilbert Yanez III, Jesse Cevallos and Nick Yanez Jr. Honorary pall bearers are grandson, Richard Cadena Jr. and granddaughter, Alexis Tamez.
Visitation will be on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Guardian Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment with Military Honors to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
