Gerald ('Jerry') Richard Hinkes of Corpus Christi, Texas, was born to eternal life on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013, after a long battle with leukemia.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved father, Joseph, mother Gertrude, brother Dan (Judy) and daughter Mary Beth. He was the beloved husband of Sylvia; brother of Tom (Sandy) and Joe (Rosemary); brother-in-law of Tomas Molina (Veronica) and Juanita Barrera (Eladio); father of Jennifer, Mary Beth, Catherine, Jane (Scott), Margaret, Christina (Mark) and Barrett (Angela); grandfather of Sarah, Shane, Kevin, Scotty, Josh, Becki, Meghan, Morgan, Brian, Mary, Ryan, Bailey and Maizy; and great-uncle, uncle, cousin and friend to many many more.
Jerry was born on February 29, 1936 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Following his graduation from Marquette University High School in 1954, he had a long and successful career in retail with the Boston Store, where he served as branch manager of Boston Village in the Milwaukee area for many years. He also enjoyed singing as a member of the Milwaukee Chorusters. In the early 1980s, Jerry moved to Texas where he embarked on his second career as a certified AODA counselor until his retirement in the late 1990s.
Jerry loved to spend time with friends and family and will be fondly remembered for his caring heart, positive attitude in the face of adversity, helpfulness to others, passion for fishing and other outdoor activities and wonderfully warm sense of humor.
Jerry had a 48-year legacy as a friend of Bill W. He helped many achieve and maintain a life of sobriety and will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched.
A memorial service with music and reception following will be held May 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 830 Williams Drive in Corpus Christi. Condolences may be made through Guardian Funeral Home (www.guardianfhcremation.com).
