IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fredrick Funston
Rogers Jr.
July 31, 1943 – June 2, 2025
It is with profound sadness and enduring love that our family announces the passing of our cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother, Fredrick Funston Rogers, Jr., better known as Rick. Rick departed this life and entered his eternal home on June 2, 2025.
Rick is survived by his wife Shelia, his daughters Eryn Seitz (Tommy), Emily Bouquet (Mark), his son Rick Rogers, his grandchildren Taylor Seitz, Ellie Seitz, Schuyler Seitz, Porter Bouquet and Annabelle Bouquet, his sister Elizabeth Covert (Rox), their children Jennie (Sam) and Anne
(Parker), and brothers, Ham (Cheryl), their children Katy and Jennifer, and Pat (Cheryl) and Pat's son Drew (Marquel), along with a wide circle of friends who became like family over the years. Rick leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty that will live on in all of us. Rick
was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick Funston Rogers ("Dutch") and Elizabeth Wilson Rogers.
Born on July 31, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, Rick was raised in Corpus Christi where he graduated from W.B. Ray High School. He began his college education at Texas A&M University before transferring to Texas Tech University, where he completed his undergraduate degree. Rick then pursued his law degree at Baylor University School of Law, graduating in 1971.
Rick began his legal career at the Nueces County District Attorney's Office, where he served as an Assistant District Attorney. He later joined the firm that would become Porter, Rogers, Dahlman & Gordon in Corpus Christi, where he built a distinguished and successful legal career.
Rick's professional accomplishments were numerous. Rick was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Western, and Northern Districts of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Rick was a proud Member of the State Bar of Texas (Sections: Litigation, Business Law, Real Estate, Probate and Trust Law), the Texas Bar Foundation, Fellow, the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, Past Director, Trial Academy Instructor, the Corpus Christi Bar Association, Past Director and other legal organizations. On June 23, 2023, Rick was honored by the Texas Bar Foundation as an Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer, an award that recognizes attorneys whose practice spanned fifty years or more and who adhere to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to the public.
Rick was the "gold standard" in representing his clients' interests. Rick committed himself to help his clients receive the highest quality representation while taking into consideration the most efficient way to resolve the issues presented. Rick's life experiences, including his
relationship with his long-time friend and golf teacher, Harvey Penick, provided him with a unique insight and human touch in representing his clients.
Rick found peace and joy outdoors. Rick enjoyed hunting and the quiet reflection it brought. But Rick's true passion was golf. He loved the game not only for the skill and challenge it demanded, but for the competition, camaraderie, and spirit it brought out in him and those he played with.
On the golf course, Rick's competitive fire burned bright, but it was always matched by his sense of humor, grace, and sportsmanship. Rick won numerous Corpus Christi Country Club golf championships, but one of his best wins was the 2013 Trans Miss Super Senior Four-Ball
Tournament held at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Bee Cave, Texas, with his brother as his partner.
Faith was the foundation of Rick's life. He was a longtime and devoted member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Corpus Christi where he served as a vestry member and lay reader. His relationship with Jesus Christ was deep and abiding, and his church community brought him
great joy and purpose.
Rick believed strongly in the power of prayer and the following prayer is one Rick shared with his sister Elizabeth several years ago.
"Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old fellow who always prayed, "Lord prop us up on our leanin' side. After hearing him pray that prayer many times, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently? He answered, "Well sir, you see, it's like this….I got an old barn out back. It's been there for a long time; it's withstood a lot of weather; it's gone through a lot of storms, and it's stood for many years. It's still standing. But one day I noticed it was leanin' to one side a bit. So I went and got some poles and propped it up on it's leanin' side so it wouldn't fall.
Then I got to thinking about how much I was like that old barn, I've been around a long time. I've withstood a lot of life's storms. I've withstood a lot of bad weather in my life, I've withstood a lot of hard times, and I'm still standing too. But I find myself leanin' to one side from time to time, so I ask the Lord to prop us up on our leanin' side, 'cause I figure a lot of us get to leanin' at times. Sometimes I get to leanin' toward anger, leanin' toward bitterness, leanin' toward hatred, leanin' toward cussing, leanin' towards a lot of things what we shouldn't. So we need to pray, "Lord prop us up on our leanin' side, so that we will stand straight and tall again, to glorify the Lord."
Our family takes comfort in knowing Rick is now at peace and reunited with loved ones who went before, and we all find strength in these words that perfectly capture how Rick lived, what he believed, and how he will be received:
"I have fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith. As a reward, a crown of righteousness is waiting for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day. And not only to me, but to all those who long to see his appearing."
In addition to Rick's family, professional and spiritual commitments, Rick was active in civic and community service. He served on the Christus Spohn Health System Foundation Board, where he continued a family legacy of service to the community. Rick's father, Dr. F. F. "Dutch"
Rogers, was a dedicated surgeon at Spohn Hospital for over 40 years, and Rick's involvement with the Foundation was a meaningful reflection of his deep respect for his father's life's work and his own desire to give back. Rick approached his civic duties with the same dedication and
care that marked every aspect of his life.
A Final Reflection – In His Own Words
"I have so many things to be thankful for in my lifetime on this earth, but the following are the greatest. First and foremost, I was blessed to be raised in a home with loving parents, Elizabeth and Dutch, who were the foundation of my life, and my beloved siblings, Elizabeth, Ham, and
Pat. Secondly, 58 years ago, I met and married the love of my life, Shelia. Our life together and the children God blessed us with, Eryn, Emily, and Rick, gave me such peace and serenity that it made all the hard work I poured into my law practice worthwhile. Everything I ever accomplished was made richer by the love and support of my family. You have been my greatest joy, my greatest comfort, and my greatest reward
.
"Phil: 1:3: "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you".
"I leave this life with a full heart, deep gratitude, and unwavering faith in God's grace. Carry forward in love, in kindness, and in strength, and know that I will always be with you."
Rick was a man of great heart, strong character, and unwavering loyalty. He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and his presence brought joy, laughter, and a sense of strength to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. Whether you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone
he met only once, Rick had a way of making you feel like you mattered.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Lala Denise Gomez and Carmelina Lopez, whose loving care and devoted support during the past two years brought comfort, dignity, and peace to Rick's life. Their presence was a blessing not only to Rick but to the entire family, and their compassion will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
Also, our family wishes to extend a very special thanks to Reverend Milton Black of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Corpus Christi. His unwavering presence, countless visits, and heartfelt prayers brought immense comfort to Rick and all of us. Milton's spiritual guidance and deep
compassion have been a true blessing, and we are all profoundly grateful for the care he has so generously given.
A celebration of Rick's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 28, 2025, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Corpus Christi. All who knew and loved him are welcome to join us in remembering a man who lived life with passion and heart.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests contributions be made to one of the organizations close to Rick's heart: Church of the Good Shepherd, 700 S. Upper Broadway, Corpus Christi, Texas 78401, Triumph Over Kid Cancer (TOKC), 723 Coleman Avenue, Corpus Christi, Texas 78401, or Christus Spohn Health System Foundation, 613 Elizabeth, Suite 605, Corpus Christi, Texas 78404.
Our family deeply appreciates your love, prayers, and support during this very difficult time.
