IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frank Edward
Dubberke
January 5, 1937 – November 22, 2024
Frank Edward Dubberke, age 87, passed away on November 22, 2024. He was born on January 5, 1937. He is a beloved husband, brother, brother in-law, uncle, father-in-law, father, grandfather, great grandfather, grand father-in-law and friend. He is deeply missed by all!
Frank grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Wheaton High School early with honors at the age of 17 and attended Northern Illinois University. At the age of 18, he withdrew from college and joined the U.S. military where he served as a paratrooper and Sergeant E-5 in the 11th Airborne, and as an E-6 in the Special Forces.
Following his military service, he made a career and retired as a newspaper printer (International Typographical Union), having worked for the Chicago Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, El Paso Times, and the Denver Post. Over the years, he was a business co-owner of a Bar & Grill in downtown Chicago (Rush Street "Gold Coast" area), known as the "The Leland Lounge" that he operated with his wife, Patricia, his brother, Robert, and sister in-law, Susan. He later attended trade school and worked as an autobody repairman for Toyota and Dodge dealerships in the Chicago area; and for a brief period was a regional semi-tractor trailer driver.
In 1994, at the age of 57, he moved to Corpus Christi to fully retire and be with his grandchildren. He enjoyed being with, and keeping in contact with, his family and friends in Texas and Illinois. In this regard, he was known for his consideration, innovation and support of his family and friends, as well as those in need that he was in a position to help. Hence, if someone needed help, he was there without hesitation.
Much of his retirement in Corpus Christi was spent supporting his grandchildren to achieve goals in school, wholesome outside school activities, and to enjoy their childhood. His input and guidance was valued and consistent throughout grade school, high school, colleges, business schools, medical school, boy scouts/Eagle Scout, football, tennis, Odyssey of the Mind, Destination Imagination, bicycling, boating, swimming, taking care of beloved dogs, and beyond - Overall, he was often with them, helped them, and encouraged them to pursue their goals and be happy along the way, both as children and young adults.
When his grandchildren were toddlers, he enjoyed having them ride with him on his bicycle. For this, he altered a bicycle seat made to be mounted on the rear of the bike to the front, so they could see what was ahead. As in life, his thought was he wanted them to "always see where they were going and be able to talk with them along the way."
