Obituary

Frances Ann Mims, 76, passed away on February 19, 2022 after a reoccurrence of cancer in Corpus Christi, Texas where she had lived for past 35 years.

Frances was the youngest of Betty and Milton Waghalter's three children and was born in Houston, Texas on September 10, 1945. Frances is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert (Bob) Mims, brother, Alan Waghalter of Chesapeake, Virginia, sister-in-law and brother-in- law, Sandra and Bill Luman of Conroe, Texas, two nieces and one nephew. She is predeceased by both her parents and her brother, Milton Waghalter, Jr.

Frances graduated from Austin High School in Austin Texas in 1963 and attended the University of Texas where she graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was a devoted Longhorn fan, a Texas Exes Life Member, and a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She and Bob had their first date at a Longhorn football game in September, 1964 and married at the St. Luke's Methodist Church, Houston, Texas, in March, 1968. She believed the quote of her favorite actress, Audrey Hepburn, "The best thing to hold onto in life is each other," since she and Bob were married for 53 years.

After college, Frances enjoyed a long career in retail sales and management; first at Neiman Marcus in Houston and then managing a women's clothing store in the Houston Galleria. When she returned to Austin so Bob could complete his doctorate in psychology, she was offered a manager's position in a burgeoning home wine making company and eventually became the general manager of the five stores in Texas. In San Angelo, Texas she managed a music store and upon her return to Houston, she used her organizational skills to manage the office of an ophthalmologist. She returned to retailing while in Corpus Christi and covered the south Texas region as a jewelry sales representative for several years and completed her career as a representative for thirteen years in a commercial printing company.

Frances and Bob shared many interests together including collecting contemporary art glass and vintage wine posters and watching sports, especially football and baseball. Listening to classical and classic rock music were also a fascination with Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and "Layla" by Eric Clapton with Derek and the Dominos being two of her personal favorites. Lifelong friends were made while living in Austin and Corpus Christi revolving around preparing gourmet food and enjoying outstanding wine tastings. She had fond memories of journeys to Spain and Italy and numerous trips to visit friends and tour the wine areas in California and Oregon. In Corpus Christi, she volunteered for many years at the annual charity wine tasting in support of the local public radio station and at the Gulf Coast Humane Society animal shelter.

Frances wished to be cremated with no funeral or memorial service and wanted to be remembered as someone who enjoyed life and was unfailingly kind to others. A special note of gratitude goes to the Nurses on Wheels Hospice for their professionalism and empathy. Donations may be given to the Gulf Coast Humane Society in Corpus Christi, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, or the charity of your choice.
