Esperanza "Hopie" Maldonado passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 7, 2022 at the age of 82.

She was born on August 12, 1939 to Manuel and Luisa Cardona in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many is now resting in peace. In this life our Hopie faced many challenges, but she embraced every new day with a smile which allowed her faith to always be greater than her fear. She was a humble servant of God and in turn taught her family to be strong, loyal, independent and caring. This beautiful legacy of love that she embedded in the hearts of many will live on for generations to come.

Hopie is joined now in heaven by her parents, Manuel and Luisa Cardona; sisters: Magdalena Cardona, Margarita Canales, Nicolasa Rios, Marcela Ortiz, Maria Nieves Hernandez, Asteria Garza, Gregoria Ortiz, Victoria Carranza, and brother: Zacarias Cardona

She is survived by her husband of over 60 years Juan J. Maldonado; children: Mary Magdalena Naranjo (Willie), Ruben Hernandez, Johnny Maldonado (Marina), Patricia Hernandez (Ronnie), Richard Roland Maldonado (Rosie), Esmeralda "Meldy" Hernandez (Joe), Brenda Garza (David); 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother Guadalupe Cardona; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly.

Public Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2022 at Guardian Funeral Home with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Visitation will resume from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Guardian Funeral Home; a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Burial to follow at 1:00 p.m. in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
