Obituary

Epifanio Cantu, passed away peacefully in Corpus Christi, Texas on September 13, 2020 at the age of 83.

He was born in China, Nuevo León, Mexico to his parents Maria and Epifanio Cantu on July 18, 1937.

It is nearly impossible to capture 83 years of a life well lived; in only a few words.

Many in Corpus Christi knew Epifanio simply as Mr. Cantu or "Mr. Jack", although some members of his family intimately called him Chacho. However it is that you knew my father, all that met him would say the same thing; he was stern but generous, hardworking, respectful, and loyal to those he loved.

In his younger years you could find Epifanio out at his ranch in Mexico, riding a horse, wearing boots and a cowboy hat; enjoying the simplicity of the day.

Although his happiness was created in Mexico, he longed for a better life and immigrated to the United States of America, and ended up in Corpus Christi, Texas.

On June 3, 1970, two hearts would be joined as one, as Epifanio married the love of his life, Juanita Cantu. At the time when they met, Epifanio did not have US citizenship so he elected to move back to Mexico as he awaited his documents. After about two years, he would finally become a US citizen and back to Corpus as he set out with a dream to create a beautiful life for his family.

A lot of labor and dedication went into this dream, with a little gambling along the way.

In 1972, tragedy would sting their heart with the loss of their baby boy, Epifanio Cantu, Jr., who passed away at birth. For years thereafter, the two would long for a child.

With sadness looming, Epifanio promised to buy Janie a house she could call home and that he did! As he acquired the money he then purchased "Jack's Department Store" for his beloved wife; where she had been an employee for many years prior to now being the owner. Together they spent countless hours running their successful business which in turn created many beautiful memories; earning him the nickname, "Mr. Jack."

In 1987, Epifanio would bring to life his loving daughter Genevieve Cantu, whom Juanita raised and loved as her own. They finally had their little girl which brought them great joy. Although Gen may not have always been happy with her clothing, she sure did look very pretty in her puffy dresses. He was a humble family man and great provider; ensuring his two girls never went without.

When Epifanio became a grandfather, his life now had an even greater purpose. The 5 grandchildren became the light of his eye. He took every opportunity he could to spend time with them. He ensured they knew the value of faith, hard work and honoring God, Our Father. Never did he allow any of the family to miss a Sunday Mass. Although he did not speak English to them, the love he shared was beyond anything words can describe.

A perfect day for my dad would be gathered around with his friends playing a game of poker or dice, taking money from the amateurs. Later in life he enjoyed his days on Texas Treasure Casino Boat, some days losing more than he won, but having fun nonetheless. He lived a happy life, one that he proudly built! Some would say he never worked a day in his life because he always loved what he did.

We are going to miss you PoPo but your legacy will live on in our hearts for generations to come.

He is preceded in death by his wife Juanita; parents: Epifanio and Maria Cantu; sisters: Ofelia Cantu, Otilia Cantu, Manuela Cantu; brother Melquiades Cantu.
