Edwin Chester Rehfeld, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully at his home with his daughters by his side on March 15, 2018.
Ed was born on September 29, 1932, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin C. Rehfeld, Sr., and Mary Mildred Wright Rehfeld, his brother, James Wright Rehfeld, and his beloved wife of 60 years, Denise Wilson Rehfeld.
He is survived by his daughters, Jeanne Klein (John) of Houston and Laura Rehfeld (Spencer Davis) of Corpus Christi; grandsons, Danny Curtis (Ashton) of Shiner, TX, Eric Curtis (Britney) of FL, Cody Curtis (Hope) of CA, and Jordan Sorrell (Hailey) of Houston; great-grandsons, Kale Curtis, Barrett Curtis, Wyatt Sorrell, Levi Sorrell, Caden Curtis and Jayce Curtis; sister-in-law Carol Rehfeld; nieces and nephews.
Ed began working for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in 1952, then joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. In Corpus Christi, he met Denise, the love of his life, and after marrying on June 8, 1954, he returned with his bride to Massachusetts to continue his service. At the end of his enlistment, they returned to Texas where he resumed his work with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, and worked there until his retirement.
Ed and Denise especially enjoyed their time together as they traveled to many exciting places all over the world with a wonderful group of friends. Upon retiring he did not stop working. He served on the Homeport Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for many years. He also enjoyed his affiliation and work with the Bucaraders and was given the honor of Parade Marshal in the 2009 Buc Days illuminated night parade. He was also very involved in the Buc Days Pro Rodeo as a committee member for many years. He was a supporter of the South Texas Trail Riders Association and loved being at the kickoff festivities to the yearly ride to San Antonio. He was active in the American Legion Post 364, and of "The Forty & Eight." He was very proud of his country and his fellow Veterans who bravely served. Whenever he heard that a Veteran was being laid to rest at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, but had no family attending, he would call his friends and they would attend the ceremony. No man left behind. He made weekly visits to the Corpus Christi Veterans Administration Clinic, bringing snacks and his sense of humor to entertain those waiting to be seen. He was an avid fisherman and hunter in his earlier years. He enjoyed the outdoors and passed that love on to his grandsons, who are passing it on to their sons. He loved his four grandsons and was so proud of them. Ed always put others before himself, unselfish, giving, caring, strong, intelligent, a family man and a Super Grampy. Aka "Mr. Ed" and "Special Ed" and "Big Ed."
Visitation with the family will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 6-8 pm at the Guardian Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at 12:30 pm, followed by the graveside service at 2 pm at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
