Obituary

Dr. Cecil A. Childers, Jr. passed away on July 4, 2018 at the age of 85 following his
struggle with Alzheimer's. Cecil was born in 1933 in Fort Worth, Texas to the late Leura
(Pettigrew) and Cecil A Childers of Abilene, Texas. He grew up on the Quarter Circle Ranch in
Winnemucca, Nevada and Abilene, Texas and attended Texas A&M College before graduating
from Hardin Simmons University in 1955 with a degree in Chemistry. He pursued graduate
studies in English at Baylor University before graduating from medical school at the University
of Tennessee Medical College. He interned at the Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio and
did his residency at the University of Oklahoma. He was board certified in Psychiatry and
Geriatric Psychiatry.
Cecil moved to Corpus Christi in 1964 to begin his 45 year private medical practice. He
served as Chief Psychiatrist for hospitals and clinics in and around Corpus Christi including
Memorial Hospital. He enjoyed a long working relationship with many local physicians and was
the first Medical Director for the Behavioral Health Center of Nueces County (formerly MHMR),
who honored him with the Pioneer Award in 2013. He was very proud of his Clinical Associate
Professorship at the University of Texas Medical School, San Antonio and his lifetime
fellowship in the American Psychiatric Association. He also was the President of P&S Hospital
and founded Seaview Psychiatric Hospital. He proudly served as a bank director for The
International Bank (now ValueBank, Texas) from 1986-1999. Cecil was a longstanding member
of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club, an avid reader, fisherman and squirrel feeder.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jonathan Thomas Michael
Childers and his brother Mike (BeeAnn) Childers. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years
Kathryn Clark Childers, and his sons Cecil A Childers III (Jennifer), Christopher Adams Childers,
and Clark Lealand Childers (Adam Walton); his grandchildren Claire and Benjamin; and his
nephew Mark (Kathrine) Childers and niece Stephanie (Lee) Pool.
The family is especially grateful to caregivers Darlene Starry, Heather Harris, and
LaToya Crews for their loving care and to AADI Home Health and Hospice for their
compassionate support. A memorial service will be held on July 10, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at The
Church of the Good Shepherd in Corpus Christi. Donations in memory of Dr. Cecil A Childers
may be made to the Behavioral Health Center of Nueces County
