IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carlos Roel
Canales
March 9, 1959 – June 24, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Carlos Canales, age 66, on June 24, 2025.
Born on March 9, 1959, in Corpus Christi, Carlos was a vibrant soul who found deep joy in fishing, hunting, and—most of all—entertaining family and friends at his picturesque lakeside home. He was the epitome of a loving uncle, known for creating unforgettable moments and sharing laughter with his nieces and nephews.
A 1977 graduate of Mary Carroll High School, Carlos moved to Austin soon after, where he met the love of his life and lifetime partner, Robert Helmreich. Together, they shared 32 beautiful years of companionship, love, and adventure. Carlos was an avid traveler who explored the world with curiosity and delight, visiting Australia, much of Europe and Asia, and Indonesia. Still, his favorite place was always Puerto Vallarta, where he loved relaxing on the beach with friends.
Carlos's childhood in Corpus Christi left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His friends often reminisced about his antics, wild sense of humor, and the strong bonds of family and friendship that shaped his life. Everyone knew Carlos for being extremely thoughtful and generous—he loved throwing themed parties and family get-togethers that people will remember for years. Even during the past 12 years, which brought difficult health challenges, Carlos never lost his ability to lift spirits and make his siblings laugh.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roel Canales; his beloved partner, Robert Helmreich; his best friend, Teddy Gray; his brother-in-law, Jimmy Milner; his maternal grandparents, Mike and Santos Couling; his paternal grandparents, C.T. and Rosa Canales; and numerous beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Carlos is survived by his devoted mother, Dora Canales, and his five siblings: Cindy (Carlos Guzman), Nora Milner, Danny Canales, Paul (Dana) Canales, and Rosie (Jason) Ortiz. He will also be deeply missed by his many adoring nieces and nephews: Misty Caffey, Dallas (Amanda) Guzman, Shannon Gunkle, Kristina Guzman, Wendy (JD) Seaney, April (April) Milner, Andrea (Patrick) Hernandez, Amanda Milner, Rebecca Canales, Grace Canales, Michael Canales, Matthew Canales, Sydney Vila, Taylor Vila, Madison Vila, Blake Canales, and Ava Rose Ortiz.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the incredible caregivers who supported Carlos in recent years: Yvonne Rodriguez, Mellie Maldonado, Mela Bernal, and Alicia Quintanilla. A special thank you to MaryJane Lemos—we could not have done this without you.
A Mass will be held in the St. Jude Chapel at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon and celebration of Carlos' life, where family and friends can gather to share memories and honor the man who brought so much joy to so many.
