Obituary

Arthur Lewis Pope Jr (Artie) was born on April 27, 1950 in Newton, New Jersey to the parents of Arthur Lewis Pope Sr. and Mary Lee Rowell. He was the second child of four children. Arthur was a man of many hats, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and family chef who was called home on April 23, 2025

Arthur received his early education at Newton High graduating in 1968. He joined the US Navy in Newton, New Jersey and served with unwavering commitment for 25 years.

During his military service Arthur accepted Christ and was baptized where he actively served the Lord. He loved golf, football, music and bowling almost as much as he loved "giving pointers" of how you should play the game

In 1990, Arthur was assigned to the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) headquartered in Corpus Christi. He joined the Coastal Bend Elks Lodge #1625 and was a dedicated financial and recording secretary. He served as the Scribe for the state of Texas.

In January 1993, Arthur retired from the US Navy with a rank of Chief Petty Officer. He continued his education at Del Mar College and graduated with an Associate's degree in Psychology and Kinesiology. With his education he served as a Probation Officer for young adults and juveniles in San Patricio County. He put his heart and soul into helping "his kids." His positive impact made an incredible difference in the lives of many young people. Many credited Arthur as saving their lives and helping to steer them on a better path.

In 2015, after serving in multiple other churches in the community, Arthur and family joined their membership with Brooks Worship Center where he continued serving the Lord as teacher, cook and helped organize events.

Arthur and his wife Barbara made their home a safe haven and the door was always open. He became a "bonus Dad" to many teenagers that came to him for a shoulder to cry on, tough love to those who sought advice, and even a scolding if it was necessary, but it was given in love. One thing was sure, they were thoroughly fed before they left.

Artie had the gift of gab. That coupled with his warm presence gave him the ability of making everyone feel comfortable and accepted. He was a man who never knew a stranger- but what Artie loved most was loving his people with cooking food, laughter, and sharing his stories with wisdom and warmth.

Arthur Lewis, Artie, Chief, Dooney, Unc, Daddy, Pop Pop, Pappa Pope. He had so many names and played so many roles for the people he loved so dearly, and had a big enough heart to do it. He will be missed more than words can ever express- but oh what a blessing it was to know him.

Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lewis Pope Sr. and Mary Lee Pope (Rowell). He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Ann Carter Pope of Corpus Christi, TX; two sisters Carolyn Lincoln and Sandra (Timothy) Baynes of Chesapeake, VA; two brothers Carl and Dan Pope of New Castle, DE; children Arthur L. Pope III (Dax) and Robert A. Pope (Bear) of Virginia; Nevtavia M. Pope of Corpus Christi, TX; and three granddaughters Dejah F. Pope of Arizona; Hannah E. Beauchamp-Pope of California; Gisele M. Pope (Gigi) of Virginia; extended family Maxine Fredericks of Albany, NY; and Rev. Joyce D. Williams of Columbus, SC. A host of nieces and nephews who will carry forward the legacy, resilience, generosity, quick wit, and sharp tongue of Arthur Pope.

We will celebrate his memory April 30, 2025 at Brooks AME Worship Center 2101 N. Port Ave. Corpus Christi, Texas. Elks Memorial begins at 10:00 A.M. and service will immediately follow at 11:00 A.M.
