IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alfonso
Garcia
January 1, 1956 – August 8, 2020
In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 8, 2020 with his family by his side, Alfonso Garcia was accepted with open arms to the Lord's house. Alfonso, also affectionately known as "Poncho" and "Boxer," was born on January 1st, (but not the first baby of the New Year) to Adriano P. Garcia and Ernestina Pantoja Garcia. He was the family's middle child and spent his early years in the Ben Garza area until his family moved to the Molina area.
He attended John F. Kennedy Elementary, Molina Jr. High and West Oso High School, where he played football. Upon graduation in June of 1974, Alfonso joined the United States Army and proudly served his country for three years. Upon completion of his service, he continued to serve his country in the United States Army Reserve and even found time to obtain an Associate's Degree from Del Mar College.
After his military and reserve service, he eventually found employment at the Corpus Christi Army Depot. He started his long career there as a supply clerk, then moved on to the airframes section in Hangar 43, before retiring from engine disassembly in Building 8 on September 3, 2014 after 35 years of service.
On August 11, 1979 (what he called the worst day ever!) he married Mary Tanguma. This union lasted three days shy of 41 years and blessed them with two children, Amanda and Alfonso. A doting father, Alfonso was involved with his children's activities, whether it was bowling, baseball, football or band. All this prepared him to be a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren. He never missed a wrestling match, baseball or football game or even a folklorico dance event, even if these activities took him to San Antonio, Houston, the Valley, Round Rock and even to Lafayette, Louisiana to attend Dominic's World Series.
Alfonso was preceded in death by his parents, Adriano P. and Ernestina Garcia.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Garcia; daughter: Amanda; son Alfonso; daughter-in-law Jesica; his grandchildren: Antonio, Mariela, Dominic and Sophia. Additionally, he is survived by his two siblings: Adriano Jr. and Alicia Garcia; along with his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family wishes to thank Nurses on Wheels. Nurses: Cordova, William, Alexis and Chris; Chaplain: John Forbes; CNAs: Elizabeth, Monica and Darlene; social worker: Richard Alonzo and DME. His healthcare providers: Dr. Nicole Ming Ming Loo and Ghazwan Kroma from San Antonio, Texas and Dr. Joanna Linsteadt. A very special thank you to Dr. Francisco Acebo and his staff for their attentiveness to all his medical needs throughout the years.
Services will be conducted by Guardian Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on August 17, 2020 , with a Holy Rosary to be recited that evening at 7:00 p.m.
