IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Agnes Clara
Lytle
September 4, 1936 – September 4, 2025
Agnes Clara Lytle went home to be with the Lord on September 4, 2025, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Agnes was born in Mt. Lucas, Texas on September 4, 1936, to John Austin McCumber and Agnes Clara McCumber. She was a graduate of George West High School where she was voted Most Likely to Succeed and earned the position of Valedictorian of her high school class. Agnes then attended the James R. Doughtery School of Nursing and majored in Registered Nurse Education.
Agnes was one of 10 children. She lost her mother at a young age (13), leaving her in charge of general running of the household and the older kids, while the younger children were cared for in Houston by their loving sister Evelyn and her husband Leo Gleinser.
Agnes welcomed 2 children, William Kelly Willoughby in 1960 and Rita Claire Gaulding (Willoughby) in 1962 from her 15-year marriage to Bill Willoughby. Some years later Agnes married William (Edward) Lytle, and she welcomed Edward's children: Melody Lytle, Rob Lytle, and Kimberly Mills Merritt to the family. They had a wonderful marriage of about 20 years before he went home to the Lord.
Agnes Lytle R.N.-C worked her entire career of 43 years at Christus Spohn Hospital and quickly moved into management positions. She gained recognition for her management style, and she was very active in hospital planning and the safety and care of her patients. She was on duty during hurricane Celia, working horrendous hours and helping to coordinate the evacuation of the top floors of Spohn Hospital while crawling in several inches of water and shattered glass. She was very dedicated to medicine and had many loyal employees that she called her friends. She was one of the few nursing supervisors that continued making rounds to patients with the doctors, and they commented on her loyalty to the protection and care of her patients.
Agnes is survived by one sister, Betty Long, two brothers, Mike McCumber (Margie), Clayton McCumber (Marie), one daughter, Rita Gaulding (Murray), her grandchildren, Shannon Higgs, Amy Newton (James), Ross Higgs, Tyler Gaulding (Emilee), Colt Gaulding and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Agnes is preceded in death by her parents, John and Agnes McCumber, her sisters Evelyn Gleinser, Maxine Dippel, Cecilia Ann McCumber, and Margaret Fiore, her brothers John McCumber and Garner McCumber, and her brothers-in-law, Marcus Long and Leo Gleinser, her niece Catherine Ann Gleinser, and nephew Leo McCumber.
A graveside service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Gussetville Cemetery, 344-378 FM-799, George West, TX 78022.
